Why small business owners could possibly need self-development?

Self-development is such an important aspect of any small business owner’s life. Actually, it should be one of the most important things in anyone’s lives.

But, what is self-development?

Self-development is the process by which a person takes steps to better themselves, such as by learning new skills or overcoming bad habits.

As Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group once said. “My biggest motivation? Just to keep challenging myself. I see life almost like one long university education that I never had – everyday I’m learning something new.”

But, why invest your time and money into self-development?

Because we will never reach the point where we know it all, yet self-development allows you to do better by shifting your focus from quantity to quality.

As Michael Venture, founder of Sub Rosa once said, “There is no finish line. There are only mile markers.”

However, some small business owners may not have the funds to spend on self-development.

If this is the case, don’t fret!

There are 2 resources that are completely free which will allow you to access materials to aid in your self-development. Those resources are:

1 The Library

There is so much self-development material in your local library that you can read which will be able to last you a lifetime.

2 The Internet

There is an amazing amount of information out there on the internet. A simple Google search of a topic that you feel you are weak in that you want to develop will produce hundreds of search results to help you.

These free resources combined with practicing a bit of discipline and you will be able to create a self-development program for yourself that will help you perform better and grow your business. Then once you’ve been able to successfully use these resources to bring some money into your business, you can invest into some outside help. However, always remember that although you can keep learning, you must also execute this knowledge.

Why?

Because just getting knowledge for knowledge sake is no good.

You must also apply that learning.

As the quote by Henry David Thoreau, an American poet and philosopher says, “You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself one.”
