Your Business Freedom

How to achieve peace on the home front

Running a family business is tough, but it doesn’t have to be as challenging as some people make it.

There is a wise saying, “Success leaves clues”.

So, if that is true, and you followed the clues, like a good detective, you’d be successful… then why do so few find that elusive success they seek?

Well, there are a number of reasons for that.

Maybe you haven’t been trained to look for clues.

Maybe you’ve been very well trained to “do the job” but you’ve never been trained in how to run a business.

Maybe you’ve never been taught about employing staff; writing clear processes, or understanding how to control cash flow.

Heck! There is just so much people aren’t trained in.

So where to start?

Have you got time to read all the books you need to read?

Have you got enough resources and resilience to learn the hard way, by getting it wrong and suffering the consequences of your mistakes?

Or, perhaps, there is another way?

My latest e-book, “How to find Peace on the Home Front, when running the family business” is a quick way of figuring out what you don’t know.

Knowing what you don’t know is half the battle.

Why? Because it tells us what you need to concentrate your efforts on.

You can also use this book as a checklist.

After you’ve had a quick read you can go back to the contents page and tick off the ones where you feel your understanding is adequate.

You can then prioritize the ones you feel you need to learn more about. Tick them off as you gain more knowledge of these topics.

You’ll never be an expert in each topic, but you will need to gain a broad understanding, and then bring in the necessary expertise to handle that topic.

The book is divided into 4 sections.

The first section is devoted to tips that affect family businesses in particular.

They cover such things as the ground rules for all family members.

Things can get awfully messy when you are running a family business.

So, this section deals with some lessons I’ve learned after running family businesses for more than 40 years.

This section also includes some sanity-preserving rules when employing family members.

I can tell you that it does not help the family dynamics when you have to sack a close family member.

The rest of the book deals with lessons I’ve learned the hard way about running a small business.

The sections are:

  • Staff Tips
  • Customer Tips
  • Strategy Tips
  • Attitude Tips

Having read it goes back to the contents page and highlight those tips you want to follow up on.

Then number those you’ve highlighted in order of importance.

All successful people are very good at ‘getting things done’.
